The poetry of Mies was mis-interpreted and mis-used by building developers who used the phrase to justify stripping buildings of all significant meaning as objects of art in order to build as cheaply as possible. It is only in a second step that Kant indicates possible connections, in his comments on aesthetic ideas, symbolism, the sensus communis, and education in general. German and British thinkers emphasised beauty as the key component of art and of the aesthetic experience, and saw art as necessarily aiming at beauty.

Attempting to think what I call Nature after Nature, I turn to the Kamakura period Zen master Dōgen Eihei (1200–1253) to explore the possibilities of thinking Nature in its non-ideological self-presentation or what Dōgen called “mountains and rivers (sansui).” I bring Dōgen into dialogue with his great champion, the American poet Gary Snyder (who understands the process of sansui as “the wild”), as well as with thinkers as diverse as Schelling, Kundera, Žižek, Agamben, and Muir. Carolyn Williams has shown that his “aesthetic historicism” is grounded in a radical skepticism toward the idea of history itself, asserting the impossibility of any kind of historical recovery, return, or revival (5). [5] That skepticism is also evident, I would add, in the bold untruths Pater presents using the deadpan tone of the scrupulous scholar.

Everyone is a practitioner of philosophy when he or she asks, "How do I know that what I think is right?" or "What is the nature of love?" Yoga is not a religion and prescribes no particular vision of God – it only claims that one can attune oneself with Divinity and the source of all Creation and eventually find reunion, a sense of wonder and amazement and intuition of the Ultimate Reality. Artists, philosophers, anthropologists, and psychologists all use the notion of art in their respective fields, and give it operational definitions that are not very similar to each others.

Arguing that what looks to be individual can be cultural (although not, importantly, universal), Bordo unmasks the larger theoretical issue Nabokov in particular helps her make: divorcing aesthetic pleasure from ethical consciousness is dangerous to actual people. My focus here is on workouts the natural bodybuilder can do at home with inexpensive equipment.

It is in pondering such considerations that one comes to realize just how deeply embedded in human nature is the aesthetic impulse, and how impossible it is to separate this impulse from the complex mental life that distinguishes human beings from beasts. Until that moment, I had thought that the magic of the information age was that it allowed us to know more, but then I realized the magic of the information age is that it allows us to know less.

In this way, beyond and before the merely reflective universalisation of the will, there lies a practical, existential topos, an ontological rooting of the individual will in the Will itself. [11] In the wake of this rooting, Schopenhauer postulates what we will designate, for our purposes, as a noumenology of the Will. [12] In this context, and this is where our reading of Book Four can be most illuminating, the blind striving of the will, throughout its excessive longings becomes multiplied and distributed within the domain of the Principle – indeed, it becomes a hydra at war with itself.
