THE BURDEN OF HISTORY lies heavily on Greece. The Lion, the Tiger, the Leopard and the Jaguar are joined by their natural ability to roar. The eventual triumph of the Greeks was achieved by alliances of city-states (the exact composition changing over time), allowing the pooling of resources and division of labor. In all fairness, it should be pointed out that in almost every case the documentation shows a Greek or Macedonian man marrying an Egyptian woman and seldom an Egyptian man marrying a Greek woman.

Derived from the Greek word phalangos (meaning �finger�), the hoplite phalanx was made up of a tight formation of spearmen, armed with large, concave shields that rested on the soldier�s left shoulder and protected the man next to him, thus forming an all- enveloping, locked curtain of defence. Greek society emphasized the importance of a tight family structure, with husband and father firmly in control. The form of the alphabet is essentially that of the ancient Ionian alphabet (see the chapter on Ancient Greek ), with some additional letter combinations not found in ancient times, and moreover, the value of some of the letters and letter combinations is different due to sound changes.
