If a slave ran away to join the military and the owner knew where and when he joined, the owner could file a compensation claim as long as he or she was loyal to the Union. Lincoln died early the next morning, and Andrew Johnson became the president. Andrew gave Silas land adjoining one of the the Chandler plantations on which Silas built a church for the Black population of Palo Alto. That the Confederacy persisted as long as it did amid this financial chaos was a wonder.

The deacon, fearing that I might miss reading his highly complimentary words, and so lack the stimulus that they might impart to my Sunday ministrations, early on the morning of the Lord’s day, sent a copy of his paper to me by special messenger, having thoughtfully marked his amiable editorial with his blue pencil.

Some of the treasure had been retained by Brig. What a strangely romantic period these two years must have been to the dreamy, poetic soldier of the North.
