I am working on it now, and my books take at least 2-3 years to research and write. A guinea, as it passes into different hands, is the historian of the f oUies and vices of its master for the time being; and thus a series of scenes and personages is made to pass before the reader, somewhat in the same manner as in The Devil upon Two Sticks and in The Chinese Tales. Romance’s most notable characteristic, for elam, is its excess. she argues that this excess extends beyond the genre’s apparent inexhaustibility to infect “high literature” as a signature of postmodernism: “in postmodernism, as in romance, the division between high and low culture, the study and the boudoir, becomes blurred” (1). this claim both seeks to justify the scope of Elam’s study of romance, in which she reads Walter scott alongside cartland and eco and underpins her readings of individual texts. (i respond in more detail to elam’s argument about the inherent relationship between romance and postmodernism early in Part i.) For elam “romance, by virtue of its complex relationship to both history and novelistic realism, will have been the genre to address the problematic of postmodernity in narrative fiction” (1).
