These three men, renowned more posthumously than in their own lifetimes, challenged the world of 1889 and became, in time, the favourites of Adolf Hitler. The Italian form of operatic realism known as verismo owes much to Wagnerian reconstruction of musical form. As a composer, I find all of this troubling, since the music of Wagner as is inescapable as the music of other musical geniuses of the 19th century, and to ignore it totally is to ignore not only the music itself, but the seminal changes which Wagner wrought in the nature of music, its composition and its performance.

Manon: French opera in five acts by Massenet; based on the frequently used story of Manon Lescaut, a simple girl from the country who suffers from making bad decisions; first performed in 1884. This device has become such a commonplace among film composers that we cannot help hearing, in Darth Vader’s “DA-da-da-DA-DUM-de-DA-DUM-de-DA,” a caricature of the giants’ motive in Das Rheingold—which is exactly what it is. After a short vacation, Wagner attempted to cover the deficit with a concert series at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which was, unfortunately, financially disappointing.

Wagner's musical training was largely left to chance until he was 18, when he studied with Theodor Weinlig in Leipzig for a year. Jeremy currently resides in Berkeley, CA. He wrote his own librettos and developed the device known as Leitmotiv, whereby short melodic ideas associated with particular characters and moods are developed throughout the opera.
