The earliest recorded illustrations of what we now know as Swift Creek Complicated Stamped pottery were presented almost 70 years before the type was formally recognized, however. In 1873 Charles C. Jones illustrated at least one sherd of this type in his classic volume Antiquities of the Southern Indians (Jones 1873:21, plate XXIX). He did not recognize them as distinct from the other stamped sherds he illustrated, most of which were much more recent in date.

One official stated that "there will be no Negros pushing wheelbarrows and boys driving trucks getting 40 cents an hour when the good white men and white women working the fields alongside these roads can hardly earn 40 cents a day" (Sitkoff 1978:49). This attitude was reflected in the pay scale Page 14 among workers despite federal guidelines. 29 (Sitkoff 1978:49). Racial problems were not limited to pay. The state administrator for WPA, Miss Gay Shepperson, was criticized by some because blacks and whites were forced to go down the same hallway to get to separate restrooms in the Fulton County Relief Office (Holmes 1975:106).

The New Deal presented a new beginning. Racial justice and equality were still a long way off, but some of the first steps were made during the 1930s with projects like the Swift Creek excavations. By 1939 the usual range of the Swift Creek Complicated Stamped ceramic type was listed as "Georgia, northwest Florida, perhaps north into the Tennessee Valley" (Haag 1939b).
