This paper proposes a new isotropic cellular automaton (CA) model for reproducing the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction observed in excitable media. Although several CA models have been proposed that exhibit isotropic patterns of the reaction, most of them need complicated rules, a large number of neighboring cells, and multiple thresholds to decide the excitation condition of cells.
We write ⊆ for set inclusion, and ⊂ for strict set inclusion. The cardinality of a set M is denoted by |M |. An iterative array with set storage is an infinite linear array of finite automata, sometimes called cells. We identify the cells by natural numbers. Each cell except the origin is connected to its both nearest neighbors (one to the left and one to the right). The input is supplied sequentially to the distinguished communication cell at the origin which is connected to its immediate neighbor to the right only.
