The user enters the query in a Prolog-like form using application-specific predicates (the ontology of the retrieval system) and sets various parameters in order to customise the retrieval operation. The query predicates correspond to the most significant information attributes. A web browser interface gives access to the ontology of query predicates including attribute-value names and information about query syntax. For the domain of technical documents, we use the following predicates: document-location, abstract-location, author, title, topic, documenttype, keyword, referred-author and referred-title.

Subjectivity may appear because of differing view points of the users about various domain aspects. Uncertainty arises due to vagueness in the retrieval needs of a user. Imprecision arises due to difficulties in the measurement and specification of the accompanying features. The existence of these semantic attributes in a query makes its processing much harder. The system has to cope with domain-dependent semantics as well as diverse user interpretations of these semantics. In our system, all of the above attribute types are supported.

A query language expressing the features (as constants) and their relationships (as predicates) is sufficient for our modelling needs. In our case, we adopted retrieval by attribute strategy. In this strategy, a query is formulated using a combination of attributes, meta-attributes, logical attributes or semantic attributes as discussed below. 1 Multimedia information attributes A multimedia object is defined as a semantic entity (contained in a multimedia item) that is meaningful in a specific domain.
